Midwest Team Racing Challenge - 2008

2008 Final Results

The local canoeists that found themselves on the final beat of one of the final races on Sunday were in for quite a scare. Two boats, skippered by Kurt Holtzen and Tim Roy, were traveling at rapid speed towards them. "I waved them across, but they just froze," Holtze recalls. Luckily, both boats missed the canoeists in headlights, and Holtze almost saved the race, a bad shift caused his teammate to lose the layline to the finish, letting the final '5 1/2 men' boat across.

The 2nd Annual Midwest Team Racing Challenge occurred on June 21st and 22nd in Minneapolis under perfect racing conditions. Three teams met on the shores of Lake Calhoun with winds blowing  10 to 15. Racing commenced at 10:00 on Saturday for the first of the 7 rotations.  Races were sailed on a USTRA digital 'N' under short, 8 to 15 minute races. Most races were competitive and several exhibited losing teams to win in the last few seconds. Shifts were violent, with the prevailing winds being countered by puffs through the Calhoun Beach Club towers.

Several protests were heard under 3 minute justice.  Nick Priaulx was removed from several races, resulting one race changing from a win to a loss. Tim Roy and Kurt Holtze were both removed from a single race, resulting in no change in score.

Final Results:
5 1/2 Men 11 - 3
FSU, Midwest Chapter 8 - 6
